Marcus Marr – Rocketship (2016)

“Rocketship” is the newest single from Marcus Marr. World Record today on Zane Lowe Beats 1 Radio. Marcus Marr is heading off on a North American DJ tour starting next week.

The last time we heard from London-based producer Marcus Marr was late last year when he dropped his excellent collaborative “Work” EP with Melbourne electro-soul crooner Chet Faker. Now, he returns to DFA Records with his killer new single “Rocketship”, a seven-minute surefire dancefloor groover, with deep vocals and a good amount of funky guitar licks. Of course, we’d expect nothing less from Marcus Marr.

“‘Rocketship’ is a tune I’ve been playing out for a good while now. It always gets a good reaction. It started life as a guitar and bass groove that I put together in my studio here in London. Then it received the wisdom of Damian Drammaticus (the deep voice). Then I laid on the other elements,” he says.

Mala – Dedication365 (2016)

‘Mirrors’ follows Mala’s 2012 Brownswood release where Gilles Peterson invited the producer to soak up Cuba’s music and culture to turn the results into ‘Mala In Cuba’. But ‘Mirrors’ is less ‘Mala In Cuba’ Mk II and more the realisation of a creative method that works for this most understated and intuitive producer: digging deep into the roots of a culture, recording local musicians and sounds, and using the recordings as source material and storyboard for a record. “It’s always going to start with the rhythm for me,” he says. Premiered by Kode 9 on Radio One – The Residency.
